To Joke or Not to Joke - The Role of a Comedian

Hello all. I’ve have been told by many that I should start my own blog. So, here it goes.  I swear, most of these entries will be funny, but first I have to get this off my chest.

A comedian’s job is to make people laugh.  Laughter is good.  Laughter makes you forget about all your shitty problems, even if it is for a minute.  Some studies suggest that laughing can actually make you live longer.  I have always had the ability to make people laugh.  Nothing brings me more joy then making others chuckle.  This is exactly why I decided to be a stand-up comedian.  My favorite type of joke is the kind where you know you should not be laughing at, but simply can’t help yourself.

Gilbert Gottfried is a comedian.  His job is to make people laugh.  Period.  Like most comedians, not everything he says is funny to everyone.  He is known for his famously loud and screechy voice.  Such a voice has been used in numerous AFLAC commercials.  But that same company recently fired Gottfried for comments he made at the expense of the Tsunami victims of Japan.  Gottfried tweeted comments such as, “Japan is so advanced.  They don’t go to the beach.  The beach comes to them.”  And, “I split up with my girlfriend, but like the Japanese say, ‘They’ll be another one floating by any minute now.’”

Were these jokes tasteless? Probably.  But coming from a man who most famous for “The Aristocrats’” joken (check it out below) , which involves incest and extremely crude language, they seem quite tame.  AFLAC should have done their research.  Comedians try to make people laugh, even in the face of tragedy.  Some people are so worried about doing and/or saying the right things that they end up do nothing at all.  Comedy is NOT politically correct.  Comedians DO NOT cure cancer.  They CAN NOT run a country.  Hell, some of us can barely write a blog.  We tell jokes.  That’s it.  Not everything we say will be funny to everyone.  Our job is to make people laugh.  Period.

What do you think about Gottfried's comments?

Don’t forget I have a show coming up at Dave and Busters on Delaware Ave.  April 2nd …. See you all there.

Remember, LAUGH EVERYDAY!!!
